Local Notes June 30th

All Ireland Feile Champions
Congratulations to the Fenagh St Caillins under 14 team on winning the Division 7 All Ireland Feile Peil Na nOg Competition. This year Fenagh St Caillins played host to 27 boys and 5 adults from Mullingar Shamrocks from Westmeath for the weekend. It all kicked off on Friday afternoon with Fenagh St Caillins traveling to Tourlestrane where they played Grange from Armagh. After a very close encounter Fenagh St Caillins pulled away in the last few minutes to record a 1-12 to 2-3 victory. Next game was also on Friday evening with Fenagh playing  Tourlestrane. Again Fenagh St Caillins emerged with a 2-7 to 2-2 win.  On a glorious Saturday morning Fenagh and Mullingar played the final group match in Pairc Sean O’Laodain with Mullingar running out winners on a 1-9 to 1-4 scoreline. As Fenagh finished second in the group behind Mullingar they qualified to play in the Quarter Final of the cup competition. All headed for Tourlestrane for the quarter final against Newport Gaels from Tipperary. In a very close match which could have gone either way, the great fighting spirit shown by the team throughout this competition helped them earn a 3 point win on a score line of 1-7 to 0-7.  Early night for both teams as Sunday beckoned. Again a glorious morning on Sunday and as both teams headed for Ballinlough to play their respective semi finals. Fenagh St Caillins opponents were Belnaleck Art McMurroughs from Fermanagh. Again it was a close game with Fenagh St Caillins running out winners on a score line of 3-6 to 1-7. Here we were again in our second Feile final in 2 years. The winners of the other semi final were Mullingar Shamrocks who had an easy win over their semi final opponents. All headed for Ballyhaunis Centre of Excellence for the finals. Having played Mullingar Shamrocks the day before and having been narrowly beaten. It was going to be another very close match. Following a frantic first fifteen minutes in which scores were at a premium the half time score was 1-3 to 0-3 with a great goal been scored by Mark Keegan. The second half was heart stopping stuff with absolutely nothing between the teams, however a cracking long range goal from Oisin McLoughlin and great teamwork all around the pitch secured an incredible victory for a Fenagh St Caillins team on a score line of 2-3 to 1-3, who  gave it everything in the final. The scenes at the end of the game were incredible as Fenagh St Caillins were All Ireland Feile Champions having defeated teams from Ulster, Munster, Connaught and Leinster. The Cup was presented to Captain Robert Maguire by Liam O’Neill President of the GAA amid great scenes of celebration.

Congrats to the 3 wise men Gerry Kilkenny, Tommy Smith and Killian McLoughlin who had the team so well prepared for this competition and who deserve great credit for this great achievement in guiding the team to this victory.

Once again like in previous years at the Feile Competitions the Fenagh St Caillins players acquitted themselves so well both on and off the field.
