The Dead Buried by the Dying: The Great Famine in Leitrim
Renowned Author and Lecturer Gerard MacAtasney presents ‘The Dead Buried by the Dying: The Great Famine in Leitrim’, in Ballinamore Library on Friday November 28th at 8.30pm.  Dr MacAtasney will speak about the new major sources he uncovered during research for his recent book of the same title.   This is a ‘must not miss’ event, admission is free and everyone is most welcome.

Farmers Rights Campaig
The Ballinamore Library ‘Picture of the Month’ for November is a framed document titled ‘Leitrim Roll of Honour 1966 – 1967 Famers Rights Campaign’.  It was presented to the N.F.A in Leitrim by Rickard Deasey, former President of the N.F.A.  It details the Leitrim County Executive Officers 1966 – 67, Chairman: Hugh Leddy, Hon Secretary: Jim Finn and Treasurer: Liam Ellis.

It outlines that on October 12th 1966, 20 Leitrim farmers started on a walk to Dublin.  They were Hugh Leddy, Joseph O’Connell, Noel Dolan, Peter Flynn, Larry Gaffney, Desmond Quinn, Peter Honeyman, Hugh P. Brady, Shay McGovern, Tommy Heraghty, Bartley Feeney, Liam Irwin, Michael Clancy, Pat McGoldrick, John J. Smith, Peter O’Connell, John J. Duignan, Thomas J, Heaney, Marcus Clements and Thomas Kelly.

Other farmers from the area who campaigned included Charley McHugh, James Gannon, John Harte, Tony Gannon and many more.

Farmer’s rights campaigns are very topical at the moment so the protests of 48 years ago may bring back many memoires to the people of Leitrim.  If this is the case why not call to Ballinamore Library during the month of November and see the names of the farmers which are beautifully written on this document. Opening hours are Mon, Wed & Fri 10 – 5.30; Tues &   Thur 10 – 8; Sat 10 – 5, with daily lunch closing 1.30 – 2.30pm.
