Congratulations and thank you for compiling the wonderful (and I guess, enormously time-consuming) survey of the old and new Fenagh Abbey Graveyard, which I know, will be of significant historical value to those – at home and abroad – who are researching their families history.
I have a number of relatives in both the old and new sections and what I am interested in – specifically in relation to the old section – is what records were kept by the Church on the individual burials within each plot and how these records might be accessed. My Logan relatives have plots 79,80, and 81 in the old section and, for example, on plot 79 the headstone states that “This Monument was erected by Cormac Logan in memory of his Father Charles and Mother Anne.” The sort of information I am after relates to who else – other than those named on the headstone – are buried in this and the other Logan plots. Were Cormac and his wife Honor also buried in plot 79? (my guess is that they were).
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
Kind Regards,
John Logan
Many congratulations on all your hard work! The last entry No.378 is my aunt Dotie Wilson so died at a young age.
Yours sincerely
Thanks Maureen for your comment. Much appreciated!!!
Saw many of the Scollan clan buried at Old Fenagh. Thank you as well for publishing these family members. I hope to visit on my next trip to Ireland
Congratulations on your hard work(and patience!)in compiling this list.
Unfortunately,I was unable to find my ancestors on there.
Patrick Leylass(Lawless?)was born in Scotland, owned a shop in Newtown.
Lizzie Curran managed this shop for him,and they later married.
Apparently, when they died,Lizzie ,although a RC,was buried with her husband in the Church of Ireland Graveyard.,Fenagh.
So lovely to find burial records of some of the Fordes of Muckros in Fenagh Parish. Thanks to all who did the transcribing of the records from the great grandchildren in America.
I can add some name of family members. My late uncles Patrick and John Murphy, both of Annaderg, Gorvagh were buried in graves 231-234. Pat died in 1991 and John unfortunately died as a young man in the 1940s. My grandfather James born 1865 -? and his wife, Margaret (nee Canning) were also buried here but for some reason, a headstone was never errected. They would be related to the other Murphy buried there but James Murphy would be a brother of Patrick Murphy NT of Fenagh who died in 1938.
John thanks very much for the info ..I will update our records over the next few days.
Kind regards
Teresa Lennon, Fenagh Visitor Centre
You’ve compiled some great information for a family researcher such as myself. My relations are Thomas McGovern d-1909 and Bridget McGovern nee Heran/Heeran d-1928 in the village of Fenagh Beg. I wonder if anyone here is familiar with this family? My email address is mecostigan@yahoo.com Thanks!
Michael – thanks for getting in touch. I will ask some of the locals and see if they can come up with any additional information. You could also try the Genealogy Centre in Ballinamore at http://www.leitrimroots.com
Kind regards,
Teresa Lennon
Re: You’ve compiled some great information for a family researcher such as myself. My relations are Thomas McGovern d-1909 and Bridget McGovern nee Heran/Heeran d-1928 in the village of Fenagh Beg.
They are on the 1901 census, two children Kate(18)-Thomas(15). (there may be other siblings who weren’t living there anymore) As Thomas doesn’t seem to be mentioned on the gravestone he probably emigrated/moved away?? so there may not be any paternal descendants left in Fenagh. Kate McKeon mentioned on the headstone is probably their daughter.

Dottie Wilson was one of my beautiful mams sisters. I’ve known she was buried here but it has only been confirmed now. Thank you My mam incidentally was Marion Martha Wilson .

Thanks so much for putting in the hard work to record these graves. My relatives were from Lawderdale House (372 – 373). My granny’s family tree records several Rynd Lawders (the source of my own Christian name). I don’t suppose there is a date recorded for the Rynd Lawder in this grave that would help me pin down which Rynd he is? I’m also trying to find out about the Lawderdale House, so if there’s any additional information on line I’d love to know about it.
you could try contacting the vanderLaan family who now live at Lawderdale House – they are at (071)9644436 and run a furniture business out of the house, their showroom is open daily (evenings and sundays phone for appointment) 0719644436 ..0871249392

Estate) Lawder/Lauder – The Lawders were a Scottish family who came to Ireland in the late 16th century marrying into landed families in county Cavan. At least one Lawder, John, is recorded as residing at Kiltubbrid, county Leitrim in 1649. The Lawder family were also settled at Bonnybeg House in Mohill parish by the late 17th century. Mough, in Fenagh parish was also associated with the family who later built Lawderdale in the same area. Several members of the family served as High Sheriffs of Leitrim between 1699-1853. McParlan records Edward Lawder “of Cloverhill” as a resident gentleman of property in county Leitrim in 1802. The Reverend Matthew Lawder, resident at Gresson House, Swanlinbar, county Cavan, succeeded to the property in 1876 and is recorded as holding 802 acres in county Leitrim in his own right. He also held property in Cavan and Limerick. William Lawder of Lawderdale is recorded as a lessor of lands in the parish of Kilronan, barony of Boyle, at the time of Griffith’s Valuation and in the 1870s his estate amounted to 3,748 acres. The representatives of Mrs W. A. Lawder of Flanker House, Drumsna, owned 1,293 acres in county Leitrim in the 1870s.

Do you have any more information on grave 15: the McGoohan family. My grandmother Ellen (Maiden name McGoohan) McGoohan’s parents were named Peter and Jane McGoohan and I would like to find out more.
We don’t have any more information on the McGoohan family but you could try contacting the Genealogy Centre in Ballinamore http://www.leitrimroots.com – kind regards, Teresa Lennon, Fenagh Visitor Centre
I think plot “No. 350 George Reynolds Loghscur” actually records the death of his son, according to Eileen Hewson book “Old graveyards of Leitrim”.
“[Reynolds Arms] …. This stone was erected by George Reynolds of Lough Scur Esq., in memory of his son James Reynolds who departed this life April the 22nd 1763 in the 23 year of his age.” ..
My mistake, Plot 353 records “James Reynolds death in 1763”. In Eileen Hewson’s book, the burial of George himself was not mentioned.
I was wondering if you had any further details of the Thomas William Muldoon buried in the cemetery, plot 315? I’m trying to trace my paternal grandfather’s death and in 7 years of searching this is the only reference I can find to Thomas William Muldoon anywhere in the world. He was born in Ballymote in County Sligo. Any help would be much appreciated!
Sara – here is a link to a documentary that aired recently on irish radio regarding the Muldoons. Hope it helps

My great grand parents and a great uncle and a great aunt are buried at the Abbey. Their address is listed as Muckross. Where and what is Muckross? Growing up I would hear about Ballinamore but not about Muckross.
Great site!!
Robert – Muckross is a townland in Fenagh not far from the village of Fenagh. It is known in Irish as MUC ROS, point of the pigs. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Muckros,+Co.+Leitrim/@54.0294877,-7.9024758,13z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x485e630534c92be7:0x77f8baad37f7f3cb!8m2!3d54.0347174!4d-7.8775201

The Thomas William Muldoon buried in plot 315 never married and had no children. (He was my father’s second cousin.) He was born in Cloodrumin, Mohill, Leitrim on 20 May 1915. Civil Registration of his birth is at https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details-civil/cba2f51453430
Sadly, not a match for you.
Looking for info regarding o dwyer family adoon plot 16
Nan is buried in fenagh, i believe with her parents
Hubert, John, James, Michael & Minie I can’t find
Sorry for delay in replying Bridget. There are some graves with no inscription or unmarked which makes it very difficult to pinpoint exact locations- and so our records only indicate those we can decipher or read. Plot 16 has Joseph 1935, Mary 1950 and Nan 1995. What dates/relationship are the other family members you have listed and are there remaining family in the area? Would they have been buried in Mohill as Gorvagh is between Fenagh and Mohill. Also have you been in touch with the Genealogy Centre in Ballinamore http://www.leitrimroots.com tel: 071 9644012 they have a searchable database of births, deaths, marriage

I am 8 generations removed from Rynd Lawder. I have his year of death as 1811 ( born 1746). His father was Frederick Lawder (1720-1801) and his mother was Rebecca Rynd (1725-1807). This information is based on work done years ago by my grandfather Ralph I. Johnson (1895-1975) who was the great-grandson of Margaret Lawder (1818-1905).
I’ve just discovered this list, it’s great. I have pictures I took on holiday form England in 2005 of a large format book with this list of graves and maps (dated 1987) of both graveyards, so maybe this list is taken from that book. I’ve got one grandparent in the old graveyard, two in the new and presumably all my great grandparents in the old.
Curiously, “313 Paddy Muldoon” is in your list of graves but not even the date from the headstone. It’s “Paddy (Dr. M.P) Muldoon, Murdered Mohill, 18th March 1923”. “In Loving Memory Of My Husband”.
He was a medical doctor. It’s close to the entrance of the Old graveyard. That 1987 book has “Paddy Muldoon, Dr”, so even that has been clipped in your list.
I did a map of the new and old graveyards to scale in 2004 using an Excel spreadsheet with about thirty plots and although he’s not a relative, I was told the story of his death and I included his inscription on my map. I’m hoping to come over for an anniversary in 2023 and now I think of it, that would be a good time to put a flower on his grave.
One of the reasons I started the map was that my paternal grandfather’s grave was never marked and after a visit in 2001 with my dad I set about locating it. One cousin in Ballinamore was at the burial in 1947. Having located the plot in 2003, my cousin put up a notice of intention and we put up a cross in 2006 with that and another cousin’s help. That grave isn’t in your list and looking at the two adjacent graves on my map, only one of them is listed. Since putting up that cross, I’ve realised that my grandfather’s parents are both there and an infant daughter. So, I’d like to add their names and dates to the memorial plate on the cross. I’ll come and say hello in 1923!
Hi, my ancestor Fanny Elizabeth Lyttle (nee St John) died 2nd July 1909 was burred here. She lived Wood Island, Bawnboy. The Leitrim Newspaper clipping I have says she was buried here but sadly I can’t find her grave so I assume she doesn’t have a headstone. Her husband William died March 1886.
Well done !! and many congratulations – this was not a simple task. I am searching for Scollans and Walpoles, and this made it very easy. I found many Scollans , but no Walpoles, and this list has relieved of the task of walking through this cemetery in search of their name. God Bless.
So happy to find this web site and thank you for your work. The Prior, Gallogly and McLoughlin families all from Fenagh, are now to my mind, confirmed as ancestors of Patrick Prior who came to NSW Australia in about 1860. Sadly no dates. However, the names were repeated in his family. Hurrah!!
hi,
i was wondering if matt devine born 1858 died 1922 is buried here?
And his father James Devine born 1833 and died 1896.
thank you

Thank you so much for compiling this source. I have a couple questions regarding the Beirne’s in #11 and #12. Three of the people seem to be the same (same name and death dates, listed under both #11 and #12). Any idea why this would be? And is there any other information listed in the file such as full death dates, birth dates, maiden names, etc? Or do you only have what is legible on the gravestone? I think this is my Beirne family but I wish I could verify that Patrick and Margaret are the parents of James (and perhaps others listed here). The James I am related to lived in Drumroosk South in 1901 and 1911 and his wife was Kate McCartin. And his father is Patrick Beirne and, I believe, Margaret Dyer/Dwyer.
Thank you,
Debbie
Debbie I have emailed a photo of the headstones to your email – it may answer some of your queries. All we have is what we can read on the headstones – if you would like to delve further you could contact our local genealogy centre in Ballinamore http://www.leitrimroots.com – they have a searchable database of births deaths marriages etc
Hope this helps somewhat.

Wow what an amazing accomplishment. Thank you for your hard work. Helpful to so many. Appreciated.
I saw a note somewhere concerning the burials at 141: Jim Scollan – 1760 and Mary Scollan -1769. It stated that Jim’s son was responsible for the erecting the grave marker. Is there any record for the name of Jim’s son?
